Triple Talaq - The practice of Muslim men instantly divorcing their wives without their consent just by uttering the word 'Talaq' thrice has been a subject of debate and controversy for a long time.
Many Muslim women have reported instances of being divorced by their husbands over trivial matters. Some of them have received Triple Talaq through posts, telegraphs, over phone or even through WhatsApp messages.
India is a secular country where all religions are respected and treated equal. But it is not just a matter of belief and traditions but the basic rights of Muslim women which needs to be safeguarded by law. As a democracy, we cannot allow the discrimination and exploitation of women.
Marriage is described as a sacred bond in Quran. In case of a divorce it should happen with the consent of both the individuals.
For many such reasons, Triple Talaq is already banned in many Muslim-majority countries like Saudi-Arabia, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is high time that this should be banned in India as well.
Good start!
